Ban condemns recent "appalling" attacks in Iraq, calls for reconciliation

UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday "strongly condemns" the attacks and assassinations in Baghdad, Kirkuk and Anbar in recent days that have killed and wounded a large number of Iraqis and urged all political leaders to achieve peace through dialogue and reconciliation, his spokesperson Michele Montas told the daily press briefing.
Expressing solidarity with the Iraqi Government and people in the face of these "appalling acts of violence,"

Ban noted that Iraq has been benefiting from an "improving security environment, and appeals to the people of Iraq to continue to reject these attempts to incite further violence in the country."


As Iraq prepares to take full responsibility for security in its cities, Ban called upon all Iraqi political leaders to work together towards achieving lasting peace through national dialogue and reconciliation.

He reiterated the UN's commitment to support the Government's efforts toward that end.

NACIONES UNIDAS, junio 29 (KUNA) - Secretario General Ban Ki-moon el lunes "condena enérgicamente" los ataques y asesinatos en Bagdad, Kirkuk y Anbar en los últimos días que han matado y herido a un gran número de iraquíes e instó a todos los políticos dirigentes para lograr la paz mediante el diálogo y la reconciliación, su portavoz Michele Montas dijo a la prensa diaria de información.
Expresando su solidaridad con el Gobierno iraquí y el pueblo en la cara de estos "actos atroces de violencia,"

Prohibición señaló que el Iraq se ha beneficiado de una "mejora de la seguridad el medio ambiente, y hace un llamamiento al pueblo de Iraq a seguir para rechazar estos intentos de incitar a más violencia en el país".


Dado que el Iraq se prepara para asumir la plena responsabilidad de la seguridad en sus ciudades, Ban exhortó a todos los dirigentes políticos iraquíes a trabajar juntos hacia el logro de una paz duradera mediante el diálogo nacional y reconciliación.

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 29, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- UN Secretary-general Ban Ki- moon on Monday slashed the recent violence in Iraq, calling upon all Iraqi leaders to work for a lasting peace through dialogue and reconciliation.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban strongly condemned the attacks and assassinations in Baghdad, Kirkuk and Anbar in recent days that have killed and wounded a large number of civilians.

He also expressed his solidarity with the Iraqi government and people of Iraq in the face of these appalling acts of violence.

Ban said he noted that Iraq has been benefiting from an improving security environment, and appealed to the people of Iraq "to continue to reject these attempts to incite further violence in the country."

As Iraq prepares to take full responsibility for security in its cities, he called upon all Iraqi political leaders "to work together towards achieving lasting peace through national dialogue and reconciliation," the statement said, adding the United Nations remained committed to supporting the government's efforts toward this end.

Violence in Iraq has dropped dramatically in recent months, but deadly attacks are still common in some Iraqi cities, casting doubt on the ability of Iraqi security forces to take over from U. S. troops the task of controlling security and defeating insurgency of both Shiite and Sunni militant groups in the war- torn country.

As part of a security pact signed between Baghdad and Washington last year, U.S. troops will withdraw from Iraqi cities and towns by Tuesday to their bases, and will leave the country by Dec. 31, 2011.
