Exiting Iraq from Chapter VII regulations and assessing achievements reached six months after signing the SOFA agreement between Iraq and the United States in addition to present rows between Kurdistan and the central government are the main issues to be discussed during Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki’s visit to New York and Washington. Al Maliki is due to meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and US President Barack Obama along with a number of US senior officials.
Iraq Turkmen Islamic Union MP Abbas Al Bayati told AFP that Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki will visit the United Nations and meet with UN Chief Ban Ki Moon in order to discuss international resolutions mainly regarding Iraq exit from Chapter VII regulations.
Al Maliki is expected to meet as well with President Barack Obama to discuss means of enhancing the SOFA agreement and cooperation over training Iraqi security forces. Al Maliki will call as well during his visit to the US on foreign companies to invest in the country, Al Bayati noted.
He added that the delegation accompanying Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki includes Foreign Minister Hosheyar Zebari, Defense Minister Abdul Qader Jassem Al Ubaidi, Interior Minister Jawad Al Boulani and other officials.
For his part, Ali Al Moussawi, one of Al Maliki’s advisors, considered that the relation with the US is multifaceted noting that both parties have succeeded in ascertaining security in the country.
Both Iraqis and Americans want these achievements to extend to other levels noting that Iraq sensed from US Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Iraq that the US seeks to enhance bilateral cooperation, Al Moussawi noted.
“His visit is an opportunity to make progress on questions regarding security, and to discuss economic, industrial and education cooperation," he told AFP.
In regards to rows with Kurds, foreign relations official in Kurdistan Regional Government Fallah Mustapha hoped the US Administration would treat Kurdistan as a special case.
The US should not only deal with Iraq’s Government but must take into consideration the particularity of KRG, he added.
While rows between Irbil and Baghdad will be brought forward during Al Maliki’s visit to the US, Mustapha urged to fund appropriate solutions in this concern in what serves Iraq’s interests.
