Iraq's inflation rate inches up in AugustSeptember 17, 2009 By The Associated Press
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's central bank says the inflation rate in August rose to 10.8 percent from 7.9 percent the previous month.
Thursday's statement says food prices have increased 12.3 percent from July's rates. The bank described the rise as temporary, citing an ongoing drought, government measures to restrict imports of foodstuffs, and a rise in demand linked to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
During Ramadan, Muslims generally break their daily fast every evening with large festive dinners.
Inflation in Iraq had climbed as high as 69.6 percent by the end of 2006 before falling sharply because of measures adopted by the bank, including higher interest rates.
