IRAQ AT ‘UNPARALLELED MOMENT OF OPPORTUNITY’, BUT ALSO ONE OF GREAT SENSITIVITY,

NEWLY APPOINTED SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE TELLS SECURITY COUNCIL



During meetings with Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in July, Iraq’s Prime Minster and Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that Iraq no longer constituted a threat to international peace and security, and that it had fulfilled many of its international obligations imposed since 1990. Referring to paragraph 67 of the Secretary-General’s report on the review of resolutions on Iraq, he expressed hope that the Council would fulfil its duty and enable Iraq to restore its international standing to the level it had before the adoption of resolutions beginning with resolution 661 (1990).

Durante las reuniones con el Secretario General Ban Ki-Moon en julio, el Primer Ministro del Iraq y el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores insistió en que el Iraq ya no constituye una amenaza para la paz y la seguridad internacionales, y que había cumplido muchas de sus obligaciones internacionales impuestas desde 1990. Refiriéndose al párrafo 67 del informe del Secretario General sobre la revisión de las resoluciones sobre el Iraq, el orador expresó la esperanza de que el Consejo cumpla con su deber y que el Iraq pueda recuperar su prestigio internacional al nivel que tenía antes de la aprobación de resoluciones que comienza con la resolución 661
