BAGHDAD, July 27, 2009 - launched today by the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation and the Organization of the United Nations Human Settlements Program country of Iraq for the years 2009-2011, in the presence of a crowd of senior officials in the Iraqi ministries, and representatives of the international community in Baghdad, including the United Nations agencies and donor countries.
The country program in the key sectors of urban governance, housing, infrastructure and basic services with a focus on providing technical assistance and national capacity-building and support to ministries and local authorities.
The program will be implemented in close partnership with the Ministry of Planning and Development Cooperation and the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works and the Ministry of Education, immigration and displaced persons and the secretariat of Baghdad and the authorities of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
It also will establish partnerships with relevant local authorities.
The cost of the current program of $ 70 million of which 49 million is not funded to date.
During the launch, Dr. HE Minister Ali Baban, Minister of Planning and Development Cooperation of the commitment of the Government of National Unity Balmottagdd to implement the national program for development and said: "This program aims to stimulate development and create employment opportunities and the provision of basic services, especially the most vulnerable poor regions and to reduce poverty and preserve the social and political stability" .
He added: "I welcome the partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements in the modernization of the Iraqi institutions in relation to housing and urban governance."
